How Can YOU Get Involved With USLES?

USLES has a wide variety of events and activities to get involved in, from participating in our shows to learning key techniques of acting and theatre production in our workshops.

It's not all theatre though, as we also host parties, nights out, trips and much much more. Whatever you're looking for, we'll have an event for you -- and if not, we're always open to suggestions.

Our yearly membership costs £7, and we also sell three-year memberships for just £12. If that sounds like something you'd be interested in, simply click below to join our wacky family!

Be a Part of Our Shows

Whether you want to act, be a stage hand or produce your own show we have a role for you!

Our shows are student written and usually take place twice a year. With each production, we undertake a process of script selection for new stories, casting and tech call to gather a team. We also have an archive of past scripts, if you'd prefer to direct without writing yourself.

Could you be a part of our next show? We think so!

Auditions

Do you consider yourself an actor, or otherwise willing to give acting a go?

If you are, then come along to one of our auditions!

We welcome new members and try to keep the atmosphere friendly and stress free.

Our guarantee is that everybody who auditions gets a role, and our scripts are written with this in mind. What that means for you is that there's no need for prep -- just turn up, tell us the size of role you want and we'll provide the scripts and groups accordingly.

And don't worry, we won't just throw you in the deep end - you'll have as much practice time as you need, you're more than welcome to have multiple tries with different scripts and characters, just let us know.

We understand that some people may be nervous to perform in front of others so we try be as encouraging and accommodating for this as possible, giving the option to perform a monologue...

Once auditions are over, we'll be in touch to announce your role, which you're automatically guaranteed to be given once you audition but under no pressure to accept. We pride ourselves on our community of theatre buffs and general fun-lovers alike, and our ability to work around our members!

Tech Call

Do you want to learn how to light a scene, create a sound board or design costumes for our actors to wear? Do you already know, and want a low-pressure environment where you can put those skills to use?

If so, join our tech team!

Behind every successful show is a successful tech team; while actors provide the drama, you'd be providing the magic.

We have a wide range positions available and you don't need to have any prior experience. We can help point you to available training that the university offers, and you'll be an expert in no time!

Script Submissions

Have you written a script, or do you have an idea for our next show?

Let us know!

We're always on the hunt for fresh stories as well as reimagined classics to put on stage as our next performance, or else our actors would be stood around all ear. We carry out script submission twice a year, and select one to be our next show!

Writers usually direct and cast their show as well, and we do our best to make this easy for directors. Most directors are offered the chance to co-direct with a member of committee, and if writers don't want to direct themselves then they're free to hand it off to someone else.

To enter your script, just email it to usles@sheffield.ac.uk. Even if your play isn't accepted first time, it will be put in our archive as a possible future project.

Our Next Script Submission:

We are currently accepting submissions for our Semester One show for 2024! Scripts should be submitted via email (usles@sheffield.ac.uk) by 13th September.

Socials

When we're not rehearsing or performing a show, we like to relax, have fun and get to know our members through a wide range of activities, parties and pub trips and we aren't stopping them yet!

Take a look below at what we have coming up and see if anything takes your fancy.

Make sure to follow our social media so you don't miss out on our future socials!

Socials

Pub Trips

After a long hard evening of acting and rehearsing, there's nothing better than sitting down at bar one ordering a pint, gin and tonic or lemonade, perhaps a bar one burger too, and having a laugh with co-stars and crew.

We do this most rehearsal nights and it provides a good end and something to look forward to. We do also frequently host sober socials as a society too.
